SEAI Energy Workshop 14.02.24
Green Schools Update
We were very lucky to have Robert from SEAI out to visit our school. The children participated in energy experiments. Robert used bouncing balls to show the conversion of kinetic energy to sound, heat and vibration. The children were shown the laws of motion in action through observing Newton's Cradle. Robert used lemon batteries to investigate the conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy. The students discussed renewable and non-renewable energy sources of energy. They looked at the problems associated with climate change and the things they can do as individuals to save energy.

Role and Purpose of the Student Council in St. Mary's N.S. Partry
St. Mary's National School believes that students have a vital role to play in creating a positive and welcoming school environment conducive to learning and happiness. We believe that our Student Council plays a requisite role in achieving this. As part of our Self School Evaluation on Wellbeing, we are focusing on giving students more of a voice in our school.
The Election Process
Voting took place in December 2023 with children from 1st-6th asked to vote for the students they feel would represent their views best on a Student Council. The following children have been elected by their peers:
1st class: Cassie
2nd class: Ruth
3rd class: Ruairi
4th class: Oilibhia
5th class: Iarla
6th class: Seán
Through our Student Council, St. Mary's National School hopes to give our pupils a more active role in the organisation of our school and ensure they are listened to and respected for their ideas and concerns. Discussions in classes and at Student Council meetings will help to develop social and learning skills in many areas including speaking and listening, problem solving, brainstorming and the decision-making process.

Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal 2023
.Team Hope’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal is an annual campaign that delivers gifts straight into the hands of children affected by poverty. Often these shoebox gifts are the only gift that a child will receive at Christmas and the joy that they bring is incredible. Thanks so much to everyone for your support in aid of this very worthy cause. Our shoeboxes were collected today and will soon be on route to their new homes.
Green schools - working towards our litter and waste flag
St. Mary’s N.S. are successfully implementing an efficient recycling and composting system reducing the amount of general waste they are producing. To eliminate litter blackspots, we had a litter pick up activities around the school grounds. The Green-schools committee members regularly monitor the bins and complete bin checklists. They empty the compost bins on a weekly basis and report any issues to the Green-schools coordinator. At committee meetings the team evaluate any litter issues around the school and discuss if and how they can be improved.
Green Schools Committee - WEEE Recycling
Thank you to everyone who brought in old and used household batteries. We nearly have ten full boxes. When they are all full they will be sent to WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) Ireland for recycling. WEEE Ireland will make a donation to the Laura Lynn Ireland's Children Hospice for each box recycled so the more batteries collected then the more money that will be donated to Laura Lynn.
