The children had a great day at our annual day of sport. The children loved all the activities and had great fun!
Junior School Tour 2023 - Turoe Pet farm
The Junior Infant, Senior Infant, 1st and 2nd classes went on school tour to Turoe Pet Farm in Loughrea on the 7th of June. The children went on a tour of the farm and even got a chance to feed the animals. As the weather was lovely the children spent time playing in the outdoor playground and astro pitch. They finished the day by going in the inflatable city. They thoroughly enjoyed their day out.
Cumann na mbunscol Final 06/06/2023
Well done to the boys team who put in a great performance at the Cumann na mBunscol Final in McHale Park on the 6th of June 2023. Unfortunately the result didn't go their way but we are so proud of their achievements in the competition. It was the first time the school has played in the competition and the occasion brought great excitement to the school and community. Thank you to everyone who supported us on the day.
Senior School Tour 2023 - Shannon river adventure centre
The children in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class had a wonderful day out on their school tour in the Shannon Adventure Centre in Rooskey on the 30th of May. They had great fun participating in land and water activities including kayaking, canoeing, pier jumping, mud slide, rock climbing wall, archery and obstacle courses.
Fire Safety Talk in the middle room
A member of the fire services presented fire safety awareness lessons to the children in 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class. Each child received a copy of the ‘Safety Team’ pack. The pack gets the fire safety message across in a fun and effective way and includes various fire safety advice, stickers, games and home checks. The school children as part of their homework were encouraged to interact with their families on the elements of the programme.
Cumann na mBunscol
Well done to all of our footballers on a great day out at the Cumann na mBunscol Division 4 competition in Flanagan Park, Ballinrobe on the 24th of April. Our boys will progress to the next stage of the competition. Our girls faced tough competition but played with great spirit and heart. We are so proud of them all. Thanks to Bryan Hennelly and Johnny Grimes for their help and support.

FAI Primary schools 5s - south region qualifiers
Congratulations to our Senior boys who won the FAI Primary Schools 5s South Mayo competition in Ballinrobe on the 3rd of March 2023. They played six matches in total and won all six! We are so proud of them. Huge thanks to Frank Burke for training and managing the boys. Thanks also for the support from the parents today. The next outing will be on the 4th of May in Milebush.
Lá Fhéile Bríde
St. Brigid is the female Patron Saint of Ireland. Her feast day today, the first of February heralds the first day of Spring. The whole school made some beautiful St. Brigid’s Crosses using the traditional method with the wild rushes to mark the occasion. Lá Fhéile Bríde Shona Daoibh go Léir!
Athletics
Well done to Richie, Seán and Tadhg on their recent atheltics achievements in Athlone on the 15th of January. They are member of Lake District Athletics club in Ballinrobe. Richie's relay team came second in the under 14' race. Seán came second in the 600 metres under 13s race and his relay team came third. Tadhg came second in the high jump under 12s and his relay team came third. We are very proud of them all.
Senior Room - World cup projects
The Senior Room had a sweepstake for the last sixteen teams in the World Cup. Each student did a project on the country they drew. Congratulations to Iarla who won the sweepstake with Argentina and to Kyle who was runner up with France. Please click on each image to view the projects.
Christmas in St. MAry's n.s. Dec 2022
The children in St. Mary's National School are really looking forward to Christmas. They took part in many festive activities in school this month. They have been learning many Christmas songs and poems and are enjoying participating in festive art and music lessons. The younger classes are busy elves in Santa's workshop and the whole school took part in a Christmas puppet show with Fr. Kenny.
Middle room - Science Project
The middle room have been learning about bridges. They worked in groups to plan, design and construct a range of bridges. All of the bridges are made out of recycled materials. The children did a super job and had great fun working as engineers. Well done to all the children who produced such fantastic bridges.
Science week 2022
There was great excitement in St. Mary's National School this week as the children were participating in fun science activities. Some of the experiments that the children were learning about include: Dancing Raisins, Floating and Sinking, Skittles Rainbow, Lava Lamps, Coke and Mentos Eruption, Magnet Experiments, Leak Proof Ziplock, Soap Repelling Pepper and many more. Well done to all of the children involved.
Christmas Shoebox appeal 2022
A huge thank you to all the parents and children for all your fantastic support this year. Team Hope's Christmas Shoebox Appeal is an annual campaign that delivers gifts straight into the hands of children affected by poverty. This is such a worthy cause and often these shoebox gifts are the only gift a child will receive at Christmas. Well done everyone.
Cross Country Connacht championship
November 2022
Well done to Séan Grimes and Eoghan Burke on their recent Cross Country achievements. Their team came second in the Connacht Cross Country Championship Under 12 category in Drumshanbo on Sunday the 6th of November. We wish them well in the All Ireland stage of the competition.
AN Garda Síochána Cenetenary Project 1922-2022
The 4th, 5th and 6th Class won An Garda Síochana Centenary 1922-2022 Mayo Schools Project Competition in the Castlebar/ Westport area. Garda Superintendent Joe McKenna, Garda Olive Lafferty and Garda Tom Fleming presented the children with a plaque and individual medals for their hard work. Well done to all involved. Their project is on display in Mayo County Library in Castlebar.
Green schools 2022/23
Green-Schools is Ireland’s leading environmental management and education programme for schools. Promoting long-term, whole-school action for the environment Green-Schools is a student-led programme with involvement from the wider community. The programme is operated and coordinated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce. The school has set up a Green Schools Committee.
Amber flag 2022/23
The Amber Flag initiative is an initiative run by Pieta House which recognises the individual efforts of primary schools to create healthy, inclusive environments that support mental wellbeing. The whole school take part at 10@10 activities every Friday where they do light exercises and share any news with their peers. The school has set up a committee for the school year 2022/23.
Remembrance Mass and Blessing Of memorial bench 5th of October 2022
We remember with great sadness the loss of Noreen and Eileen Horan in a car accident outside our school on the 5th of October 2022. We attended the blessing of their memorial bench on the 40th anniversary. May their gentle souls rest in peace.

School YEar 2021/22
Our Incredible Edible Healthy Eating Project is well underway here in St Mary's NS Partry. The children are learning all about where our food comes from and how we can grow our own fruit and vegetables here in our school. This project has been launched by Agri Aware in conjunction with Board Bia. We hope to grow, cook and eat all the fruits and vegetables that we grow over the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more updates.

The children are working on their Amber Flag this year which is run by Pieta House and promotes positive mental health among children and young people. The children have been engaged in the area of well-being and mindfulness for some time now and this year we will explore more ways of promoting positive mental health in St Mary's NS.

lots of fun Becoming a farm safe school
Agri Aware in partnership with the IFA and supported by the Dep pf Agriculture, food and Marine teamed up and launched the first of its kind 'Farm Safety Schools Programme' in February 2022. St Mary's NS were delighted to sign up to help create a safer, brighter future on Irish farms. The programme ran over 3 modules and was closely linked to the primary school curriculum. The children really enjoyed engaging with all the fun, interactive resources and webinars.

This year the children were very excited to get involved once again in the Annual Team Hope Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. This is an Irish organisation dedicated to helping vulnerable children around the world. They deliver these gifts straight into the hands of children affected by poverty. Often these shoe box gifts are the only gift that a child will receive at Christmas and the joy that they bring is incredible. Since 2010 they have delivered over 2.1 million shoebox gifts. Well done to all the boys and girls who got involved.

Congratulations to Séamus Burke and Seán Grimes on their fantastic achievements at the National Cross Country event in Kilkenny on the 5th of December.
Séamus Burke (6th class) came 9th in the under 13 category. He was also a member of the Connaught team who came second. Seán Grimes (4th class) came 29th in the under 11 category and he also got a silver team medal for Mayo. The boys kindly brought in their medals to show everyone at school. Well done Séamus and Seán! We are all very proud of you! |
There was lots of excitement in St Mary's NS this week as we welcomed Lynda from The Lough Carra Catchment Association.
She brought along a tree to plant in our school and one for each pupil and adult in the school. Lynda & Ms Horan alongside many other schools in the area have come together to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of the natural environment around Lough Carra. The children learnt all about 'Planting a pesticide free Tree ' this week and all about biodiversity. |
It was a spooky playground today in St Mary's NS with the boys and girls dressed up for Halloween.

Our New SET Room
SET: Ms. Conroy This year we were delighted to move into our new extension. It includes a bright, spacious SET room with lots of room for larger groups and plenty of storage. Inclusion and meaningful differentiation are important to us. Everyone benefits from our wonderful new extension. We have lots of areas within our new SET Room including: Literacy Numeracy Occupational therapy Learning with Numicon We have a fantastic range of resources for each area including: An extensive range of graded readers, including PM readers Numicon Literacy and numeracy games suitable for all class levelsEAL Resources, Social Stories, OT Resources, Nexus Pegs to Paper, Handwriting Without Tears, 13 Chrome Books and 5 Apple Ipads, Mindfulness meditations and activities These resources are also utilised during team teaching lessons.
